Draw blocks

Use this panel to specify the exact size of a rectangular block, or grid of blocks, and then place it in your model.

Default Settings

Type

Choose the Block settings which you would like applied to the new block(s).

X-Route

Choose the Route Type that you would like applied to the 'left-right' routes surrounding the new block(s)

Y-Route

Choose the Route Type that you would like applied to the 'up-down' routes surrounding the new block(s)

X and Y Routes

By default, the X routes will be the routes on the northern and southern perimeter of your block(s), and the Y routes will be on the western and southern perimeter of your block(s). This may change if you alter the default orientation. For example they will be reversed if you set the default orientation to 90 or 270 degrees.

Select whether the length and width values apply to:

Then enter a value for the orientation (by default this is zero ie. the length is oriented east-west).

If you wish to place an array of blocks, then enter values for rows and columns.

Click 'Add to Model...' and then click once in the Main Display Window to place the block(s).

Gridirons - size limits

When creating gridirons automatically, the total number of rows or columns is restricted to 100, and the total number of blocks is restricted to 500.

Why have different route types for X and Y?

Several urban gridiron systems have different street types depending on orientation. For example, in New York City, the north-south routes are the wider 'avenues', whereas the west-east routes are narrower 'streets'.
